Welcoming this sweet older newborn into the studio was such a joy. Everyone, meet Sofie, the sweet little girl in the images below. Right away, her bright eyes told me this session would be special. As a result, she was awake, engaging, and full of personality. This blog post focuses on exactly how I pose an older newborn for beautiful, natural results.
From the start, I leaned into soft lavender tones and delicate textures. Mom loves the fairy theme so I tried to stick to a whimsical and elegant vibe. Not only did the colors complement her features beautifully, but they also created a dreamy feel. Meanwhile, her expressions kept changing, which made the session even more fun!
Because she was older, I adjusted my expectations. However, I did not change my core process. Instead, I treated this older newborn just like a one-week-old baby. That approach makes a huge difference in achieving those classic newborn looks.
If you have an older newborn and are considering a session like this, you can also read this blog post about a 6 week old.
Posing an older newborn is all about balance. First, I embrace that baby will likely be awake for most of the session. Then, I create an environment that encourages sleep when possible. Because of this, I can capture both awake and sleepy images. I also give the parents a ton of tips on how to keep the baby active before the session, so the baby hopefully falls asleep during their session.
Sofie was a perfect example. She stayed alert and curious for much of the time. However, I was still able to gently guide her into sleep. The key is creating a calm, cozy setup. I always use a sound machine, a heater, and soft wraps. As a result, the environment mimics the womb and helps baby relax.
Even so, I never force sleep. Instead, I work with what baby gives me. An older newborn who is awake is actually one of my favorites. Not only can we capture eye contact, but we also get smiles and silly faces. Those expressions truly mean everything and often become favorite images.
Next, I move into simple, supported poses. If baby will allow me, I use wraps to keep baby secure while allowing natural movement. This is especially important for an older newborn, since they are stronger and more aware. Meanwhile, I keep posing gently and minimally to maintain comfort. Since baby still needs head support, when the baby is awake I keep baby on their backs for safety.
Then, when baby begins to settle, I transition into more traditional sleepy poses. Because I already created a cozy environment, this step feels seamless. As a result, I can still achieve those soft, curled newborn images. Those images where baby is curled up or laying on their belly is when I capture these types of poses.
Overall, photographing an older newborn is very similar to photographing a one week old. The biggest difference is mindset. When you stay flexible and follow baby’s lead, everything falls into place.
In the end, this session with Sofie was full of variety, emotion, and personality. It perfectly shows that an older newborn session can be just as magical, if not more.
